Catching up on new releases from Neko Case, Amanda Shires, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant, James McMurtry, Wet Leg, Van Morrison, Tami Neilson, Tyler Childers, Charley Crockett, and Babs & Bob.
Welllll...According to his label Nonesuch, "Saving Grace breathes fresh life into a collection of century-old music. A treasury of songs featured back in time by Memphis Minnie, Bob Mosley (Moby Grape), Blind Willie Johnson, The Low Anthem, Martha Scanlan, Sarah Siskind, and Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk’s Low."
Of course, Plant's been "covering" songs since "You Shook Me" from the first Zep album (among many, many others--especially blues). It's all in the interpretation for me.
Some great recommendations here, thanks Michael! I’m already very much enjoying Wet Leg’s latest and looking forward to Neko Case’s upcoming album. I wasn’t aware that Robert Plant and Amanda Shires had new releases coming - both of those new songs sound fantastic. While never having been a big fan of Springsteen, I’ve fallen in love with the “Twilight Hours” disc of Tracks II. Charley Crockett is new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed Oneida; that album will definitely be worth checking out.
Have you heard the debut album by Will Worden, “The Only One & All the Others”? While I’d never consider myself a big country fan, I’m loving this album and highly recommend it.
Yes, I'm digging 'Twilight Hours' as well. SO much to digest in Tracks II...
Just checked out Will Worden and, wow, this guy sure is trad-country stylized right down to the production, isn't he? In situations like this, I usually compare it to the music they're paying homage to, to see if it would hold its own if it were released alongside those classic songs in, say, the 1960s. Otherwise, what's the point? There are a couple that grabbed me right off, such as "Broken Wings" and "Pines in the Wind." If you're enjoying this, I highly recommend Marty Robbins, the artist who Worden most reminds me of. Start with "Don't Worry" and "I Walk Alone."
“Broken Wings” is a great track. I love Molly Lewis’s whistling. Her album “On the Lips” from last year is fantastic if you haven’t heard it. Thanks for the heads up on Marty Robbins, I’ll check him out!
Looking forward to the Plant album! I hope it’s not full of covers.

Thanks for reading and the recommendation!

McMurtry can do no wrong, indeed.
