Great playlist, thanks Michael! I had it playing as I drove around town today - much of it familiar, but plenty new to me as well. That J.D. McPherson track is killer! I love Christmas music and especially re-interpretations like most of these.
I'll have this ready to go for the family gathering tomorrow evening. thanks so much. Great music, great writing, thanks so much for both!!! have an incredibly incredible holiday season!!
A good list, I'll listen to it tomorrow before I switch to BBC for the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. To be honest, Christmas is not my favorite time of year for a number of reasons, and like any music lover I deal with it by listening to the blues - in particular, one song I have always loved: Please Come Home For Christmas. A few of my favorite versions in more or less their order of release:
Charles Brown - the original, 1960 on King Records. I first heard this in the mid-70s on the old WXDU radio station when they had an R&B show on Saturdays. The DJ, Jim Davis, and his amazing collection can now be heard on WNCU on Saturday afternoons.
James Brown - James proves that he was the master of funk and blues one more time. In classic fashion, the band sounds like they’ve had a few drinks before the session - a sound Ray Charles perfected.
Johnny Winter - from his largely forgotten “First Winter” album which was a bootleg but he released the tune at least two more times, once with his brother Edgar
Thanks for the reminder! One of my favorites as well. I love Brown’s version of course, but my favorite must be Winter’s version - particularly the one from ‘Hey, Where’s Your Brother’ from ‘92 with Edgar. The phrasing on that one is the best I’ve heard.
This particular playlist - like most of mine - are ever-changing and expanding, so I’ll be adding more between now and Christmas Day.
Thanks for listening and here’s hoping yours is as joyous as it can be despite the less than happy memories attached.
Now this is a Christmas playlist 👏🏼
Diggin it!

Glad you like it! That whole JD Christmas album is one of the best Christmas offerings I've heard in years from anyone!

Eagles - the classic Top 40 version, with some nice guitar work - I’ve never been able to figure out if it’s Don Felder or Joe Walsh

Josh Turner with Hayley Blais - Joshua Lee Turner needs to be more famous, especially his work with Allison Young AKA The Bygones

Arron Neville - A soulful version to end the playlist.
